This month we are going to take it back to basics - with a focus on latch and positioning! Keep an eye on our facebook and instagram pages throughout the month for additional tips and guidance!

A good deep latch starts with positioning that helps baby instincts to kick in! Think about alignment of ear, shoulder and hip as baby is brought in to the breast tummy to tummy. It is ok for them to sling diagonally across your body, and have them give you a "hug," tucking that pesky bottom arm around and under the breast! Make sure the chin can press deeply into the breast as the mouth goes up and over like a bite of a big sandwich! Sometimes it helps to line baby up "nipple to nose" to help accomplish this. Remember, baby is latching onto the breast, not just the nipple! Also, pay attention to your own alignment...lean back and bring baby with you (no hunching over!), and relax your back and shoulders. Have a support person look to see if you are hunched forward or sideways, and where you need to straighten out or add additional support (little pillows, rolled up blankets etc.) Watch for chin drops and listen for swallows. Throughout the month, we will feature some of my favorite breastfeeding positions on social media...see you there!
